SSPX – schism and doctrinal errors

SSPX - Darth Vader Lefebvre

Over at The Ecclesia Blog, Dom Dalmasso has a really good article on the current status of the SSPX as far as its relationship with the Catholic Church goes. An important read for Catholics contemplating or actually attending SSPX Masses.

Archbishop Lefebvre: “Africans not yet mature”

SSPX founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre wasn’t a fan of the idea of African bishops, and thought Africans still needed European bishops looking after them. He was, from 1947-1961, a bishop in “French Africa”, specifically as archbishop of Dakar, Senegal. Towards the end of his time there, he told Pope John XXIII that “the Africans are …

Can Pope Francis grant schismatics faculties?

Pope Francis in Korea

An important point been raised by sympathisers suggesting that schism doesn’t exist: the granting of faculties to SSPX priests for valid confession. This is unusual, unheard of, and suspended priests and schismatic priests do not have faculties, and therefore they cannot be suspended and/or schismatic.

SSPX is in schism due to lack of faith

Archbishop Lefebvre in 1981 - suspended even from hearing confessions barring an emergency

The Society of St Pius X (SSPX) was born in an act of schism stemming from a loss of faith and trust in God and his Church.

Yes, the SSPX is schismatic

Carlo Maria Vigano in 2013

Recently, Archbishop Vigano and Bishop Athanasius Schneider opined that the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) is not in schism. Vigano claimed that Archbishop Lefebvre, the SSPX founder, was a holy man who demonstrated great fidelity to the Church.

I beg to differ.

The Two Feasts of St Maria Goretti

Dark blue ribbon - Child abuse prevention

Today is the Feast of St Maria Goretti, an 11-year old Italian girl who, during a sexual assault that turned fatal, was concerned about the salvation of her assailant, and, a few days later, expressed her forgiveness of him on her deathbed.

The SSPX and the Demonic

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Pray for the conversion of the SSPX
That they abandon their errors
That they return to the Catholic faith
That they recognise the humanity in their neighbour
And that, as penance, the society be abolished and do no further harm.

Catholic “science” forums

Pope Francis giving a polio vaccine

I had an interesting encounter today on a Facebook group “Catholic Science Geeks”. Across several posts, the discussions showed that there were several antivaxxers present. Several people didn’t want to have COVID vaccines because they were nervous about them. That’s a legitimate reaction. However, several were trying to promote vaccine avoidance because, supposedly, vaccine efficacy is unknown. That’s not true. What is worse is that these so-called “scientists” aren’t persuaded by evidence.

Mass Panic – On Limiting the Extraordinary Form

The Tridentine Mass, by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter

There have been rumours on and off for years that Pope Francis will suppress or limit the use of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Rumours from the conspiracy theorist side, and rumours from the rational side. Now the rumours say there is a document in development.

Toxic Traditionalism and Steve Skojec

Jack o' Lantern

Steve Skojec, until now, has been a traditionalist and co-author at the often toxic website One Peter Five. Over time he has taken a more rational approach to many of the irrational positions many traditionalists have taken. Now, it seems, he has come to a startling realisation that the traditionalist subculture is indeed toxic, and he is leaving it. Where he will go is unclear. I hope he stays Catholic, but here are speculations of other paths he might take.

Cryptocurrency spam and some fun

Telegram logo

Telegram settings should be set so that only your contacts can message you or call you or add you to groups. For me, that latter two are set, the former not. I am on an ICE3X* discussion group, and a number of people started spam conversations trying to get me to sign up at some or other bitcoin website. I played with one such person for a few days. I finally got her to agree to marry me, and then I blocked her. Relationships like that can’t continue forever.

The SSPX preaches fake Sunday history

Constantine the Great

When you listen to a sermon, and the priest tells you something historical, you expect it to be true. Not something he just made up for the sermon.
When you read a church’s website that says they’re celebrating 1700 years of something, you expect that the event being celebrated is a historical one.
With the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) that is unfortunately not the case, as I’ve discovered. What follows here is over and above the fake funerals they tried to con the police into letting them have.

The Cape Town SSPX, calumny, and fear

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Today, as I was leaving for work, a member of the neighbouring Society of St Pius X (SSPX) congregation complained to me about what I’d said in the Pinelands Facebook group.
He clearly hadn’t read what I wrote there himself, so he accused me of calumny. Specifically relating to the issue of their (at the time) bishop Williamson’s Holocaust denialism and antisemitism.
