That is very much a Catholic principle (Catholic means universal) for which Catholicism has, at times, been criticised by patriotic American Protestants. It’s good to see that Bacchiocchi, and Adventist leaders at the General Conference, have recognised the truth in the Catholic position.

Bacchiocchi, 666, and Vicarius Filii Dei
Thank you, Dr Bacchiocchi, for that honesty. The Pope’s tiara does not have the words Vicarius Filii Dei on them. The phrase is not, and never was, used as an official papal title. It’s an anti-Catholic manipulation of a real papal title – Vicarius Christi. So Adventism’s leaders are coming round to accepting the facts … Bacchiocchi denies the Adventist tradition of Vicarius Filii Dei, a name that never existed. With time, all will.

Adventism’s re-elected pope
Paulsen appears to be a conservative, going the way of the traditionalists who hold to Ellen White’s writings. It’s unlikely that he’ll reform the Adventist denomination regarding their views on Ellen White – he has not done so thus far. He is looking at liturgy reform, it seems, in his views on church music. At least the views expressed do not go to the extreme Bacchiocchi goes to.

Samuele Bacchiocchi and HH Pope Benedict XVI
The papacy features a lot in Adventist prophecy, and it’s not surprising that Dr Bacchiocchi has taken the opportunity of the death of Pope John Paul II and the election of Pope Benedict XVI to promote Adventism’s anti-Catholic views. But this statement of his shows his extreme ignorance of the two men.

Testimony of an ex-Adventist #2
I was a third-generation Adventist until 15 years ago when I left and never looked back. I came from a “traditional” Adventist home where I was taught that the Catholic Church was Babylon and the Pope was practically Satan himself. This is pretty typical of traditional SDA teachings, saturated as they are with Ellen White’s drivel.

Adventist pastor gives an example of uninspired statements by Paul in the Bible
In my recent discussion with Pastor O, it came up that he teaches that some of Paul’s writings are uninspired opinions only – not all of what Paul wrote in the New Testament was the inspired word of God. The pastor did this because he needs to bring the Bible down to the level of his church’s founder and prophetess Ellen White, who contradicts the Bible and prophesies falsely on many, many occasions.

Recently I had a discussion with a certain Pastor O of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Copied in below is a section of one e-mail he sent me 29 August 2001. In it he states that some of what Paul wrote is not really inspired, it is merely “opinion.”

Dies Domini – a response to Samuele Bacchiocchi
Prof Samuele Bacchiocchi is one of the Adventist Church’s leading scholars. Recently he has written a response to the papal encyclical Dies Domini (The Day of the Lord). In this essay I have responded briefly to some of his claims. I have not done an exhaustive study on the matter, as time does not permit that. Perhaps that will come in time.
