Adventist desperation on Usenet – Statues and idols

Grumpy woman

People like Andrew spend their time so grossly and dishonestly misrepresenting Catholicism, that the end result is that they misrepresent their own denomination by giving the false impression that Adventists are unscrupulous, and will stoop to incredible depths to attack other faiths. Ultimately, this only serves to benefit Catholicism – the only people who remain to take his side are equally unscrupulous characters, leaving the rest disgusted, and with a better understanding of what Catholicism really believes and practices.

Vegetarianism and Adventism

Isa 25:6 KJV And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

The South African Great Disappointment

On 23 October 2005, “161 years plus 1 day after the 22 Oct. 1844 great disappointment,” the Cape Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church voted 56% in favour, and 44% against, a dissolution of their conference, and a merger with the Southern Hope Conference. The Cape Conference serves white Adventists in the Cape, South Africa, while the Southern Hope Conference serves black and coloured Adventists.

From sunset to sunset

This is the passage that Adventists follow in their sunset to sunset idea of the Sabbath. Most of them don’t realise that this is part of the Mosaic law that they consider abolished, because it does not refer to the Sabbath, but to the Day of Atonement. The author cleverly conceals this fact with “…” and then lies about what the passage is describing.

Counting the 10 Commandments

10 Commandments

Adventists often complain because Catholics count the ten commandments differently, and claim that we have changed things. Here is an Adventist commentary that explains that how they are counted is not important. So if we count it the (western) Catholic way, it’s fine. If we count it the (eastern) Catholic way, like Adventists, it’s also fine.

Protesting Adventist singers

Who changed the Sabbath: Adventist misquoting

Often one sees Adventists quoting Catholic sources to show that the Catholic Church changed the Sabbath to Sunday. Usually these quotes are either from sources that are not real sources of Catholic teaching (e.g. newspapers) while others are taken out of context.

Adventist Church: “Bible not true”

Since there is an misleading and ongoing thread in various forums about the Catholic Church saying that the Bible is not true, it is appropriate to point out that Adventism, like Catholicism, takes some verses literally, and others it does not take literally. There is no real difference between what each is saying; the difference lies in interpretation, not principle.

Pope Sylvester I – who changed the Sabbath?

Michael Scheifler has a “rebuttal” on his website to something I wrote. He claims that the pope who changed the Sabbath to Sunday was Pope Sylvester I. In light of the teachings of Ellen White, and in light of history – as taught by real historians – this cannot be seen as more than a failed attempt to make the argument seem viable. But it is not viable.

And no man hath ascended up to heaven

Adventists and others often use the following verse to show that Catholics are wrong in saying that the souls of the dead can go to heaven immediately after death: (Joh 3:13 KJV) And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

The Clear Word Bible

The Clear Word Bible is an Adventist production of the quality of the New World Translation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Questions on Doctrine

The saving grace of the entire situation is that the Adventists fortunately deny the logical conclusions to which their doctrines must lead them; i.e. a negation of the full validity of the atonement of Christ, which validity they absolutely confirm, and embrace with considerable fervor – a paradoxical situation at best!

When did Adventism lose the truth?

Bacchiocchi: “It is noteworthy that Jehovah’s Witnesses as well as the various churches stemming from Church of God Seventh Day (Worldwide Church of God, United Church of God, Church of God International, etc.), inherited the view of Christ as the first creature of God from our own Seventh-day Adventist Church. The reason is that they left our Adventist church prior to our acceptance of the doctrine of the TRINITY.”

Modern vs. Postmodern Adventism

Theologically, the post-modernists are correct. Ellen White was not inspired. She made plenty of errors in her writings and in her theology. Adventism is not a remnant any more than the Jehovah’s Witnesses are, any more than Herbert Armstrong, Mary Baker Eddy, or Joseph Smith were.

Catholic Adventism?

That is very much a Catholic principle (Catholic means universal) for which Catholicism has, at times, been criticised by patriotic American Protestants. It’s good to see that Bacchiocchi, and Adventist leaders at the General Conference, have recognised the truth in the Catholic position.

Bacchiocchi, 666, and Vicarius Filii Dei

Thank you, Dr Bacchiocchi, for that honesty. The Pope’s tiara does not have the words Vicarius Filii Dei on them. The phrase is not, and never was, used as an official papal title. It’s an anti-Catholic manipulation of a real papal title – Vicarius Christi. So Adventism’s leaders are coming round to accepting the facts … Bacchiocchi denies the Adventist tradition of Vicarius Filii Dei, a name that never existed. With time, all will.

How to say Adventism, and their new Fundamental Belief

On 7 July, Kermit Netteburg commented on the General Conference blog on the adoption of the new Fundamental Belief of the SDA church at their General Conference (in some ways, much like the Ecumenical Councils of the Catholics and Orthodox, such as the Council of Nicaea or Vatican II. Perhaps more like a synod of bishops called to Rome – not just a local synod.)

Alcohol content of Coke

Adventists are known for avoiding certain types of food, such as “unclean” meat, alcohol, and beverages containing caffeine. So that cuts out Coke for those who are strict regarding the caffeine. With alcohol, they are strict, although I think that their clergy should also abstain from grape juice. I’m not sure how strict they are in general when it comes to caffeine – those Adventists I know have had Coke in my presence, and coffee. And this news item should not scare them about Coke’s alcohol content – it seems to be lower than the alcohol content of normal bread baked with yeast, which makes alcohol.
