Prime Minister Julia Gillard has delivered a national apology to victims of forced adoption practices<\/a> that were in place in Australia from the late 1950s to the 1970s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can imagine that one day humanity will say these words about abortion:<\/p>\n

“Today, this Parliament, on\u00a0behalf of the Australian\u00a0people, takes responsibility and apologises for the policies\u00a0and practices that forced the\u00a0separation of mothers from\u00a0their babies which created a\u00a0lifelong legacy of pain and\u00a0suffering,”<\/span> she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We deplore the shameful practices that denied you, the mothers, your fundamental rights and responsibilities to love and care for your children.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“We say sorry to you, the mothers, who were denied knowledge of your rights, which meant you could not provide informed consent. You were given false assurances. You were forced to endure the coercion and brutality of practices that were unethical, dishonest and in many cases illegal.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You won’t hear this today:<\/p>\n

The crowd erupted with applause and many broke down in tears at several points throughout the speech.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But we might hear this in the future.\u00a0 100 years.\u00a0 Maybe 200.\u00a0 Maybe 300.<\/p>\n

“Friends, as the\u00a0time for birth came, these\u00a0babies would be snatched away\u00a0before they had even held them\u00a0in their arms,”<\/span> she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Sometimes,\u00a0consent was achieved by forgery\u00a0or fraud. Sometimes women\u00a0signed adoption papers whilst\u00a0under the influence of\u00a0medication.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Most common of all\u00a0was the bullying arrogance of a\u00a0society that presumed to know\u00a0what was best.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The hurt did not simply last\u00a0for a few days or weeks. This\u00a0was a wound that would not\u00a0heal.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
