{"id":1443,"date":"2005-10-21T18:02:50","date_gmt":"2005-10-21T16:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1443"},"modified":"2013-03-10T14:09:28","modified_gmt":"2013-03-10T12:09:28","slug":"missing-sunday-mass-a-sin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1443","title":{"rendered":"Missing Sunday Mass a sin?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DiscussingAdventismBook\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/wp-content\/plugins\/facebook-button-plugin\/images\/standard-facebook-ico.png\" alt=\"Fb-Button\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1443\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"standard\"  width=\"400px\" size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"fb-share-button  \" data-href=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1443\" data-type=\"button_count\" data-size=\"small\"><\/div><\/div><p>I got this question by e-mail recently:<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\"><p><span style=\"color: #336666;\">If Sabbath was not moral law then why does the Roman Catholic Church say it is a mortal sin to miss Sunday [the new Sabbath?] worship?\u00a0 If we don&#8217;t\u00a0<strong>have to\u00a0<\/strong>observe the 7th day then why would we\u00a0<strong>have to\u00a0<\/strong>observe the first day?\u00a0 God never ever said that!\u00a0 I&#8217;m so confused.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1562\" alt=\"The Mass\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mass-bigger-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mass-bigger-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Mass-bigger.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>That&#8217;s a very good question.<\/p>\n<p>The Sabbath is not a moral law in that the timing of it has nothing moral about it &#8211; that is purely ceremonial, a remembrance of a certain event.\u00a0 The moral aspect lies with our duty to God.\u00a0 It is our duty to worship God, and this includes coming together as a community of believers.\u00a0 (Obviously not always possible, but the New Testament does call for more than private faith without fellowship.)<\/p>\n<p>The New Testament does not bind us to the Sabbath &#8211; in fact, Paul tells us that whatever day we keep, we do so for the glory of God.\u00a0 He also says that the Sabbath is a shadow of what we now have the reality of in Christ.\u00a0 The day, the timing, is not important to Christians.<\/p>\n<p>God did not formally ordain Sunday as a day of worship &#8211; that was done by the early Christians, with the Holy Spirit working in them (and is <a title=\"The Sabbath and the First Day in the New Testament\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?page_id=316\">recorded in the Bible<\/a>).\u00a0 Its purpose was to give glory to God by celebrating the resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>Unless there is a good reason not to, refusal to worship with fellow Christians must be seen in a negative light &#8211; it is not good for the Christian, and it is not good for the fellowship of the Church.\u00a0 It is in that sense that not going to church is considered to be a sin.\u00a0 That is the moral sense that existed when the Sabbath was in force as well, and while the timing on the 7th day is no longer of importance to Christians, the same moral requirement to worship God applies to Christians on Sundays, Easter, Christmas, and any day when the faithful gather together as a group to celebrate some aspect of Christ&#8217;s life and work.\u00a0 For those who still keep the 7th day, God will judge their hearts, not their calendar, and so the same moral principle would apply to them regarding the Sabbath.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unless there is a good reason not to, refusal to worship with fellow Christians must be seen in a negative light &#8211; it is not good for the Christian, and it is not good for the fellowship of the Church.
