{"id":1009,"date":"2013-02-24T14:46:35","date_gmt":"2013-02-24T12:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1009"},"modified":"2016-04-17T11:47:57","modified_gmt":"2016-04-17T09:47:57","slug":"samuele-bacchiocchi-and-the-gregorian-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1009","title":{"rendered":"Samuele Bacchiocchi and the Gregorian controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DiscussingAdventismBook\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/wp-content\/plugins\/facebook-button-plugin\/images\/standard-facebook-ico.png\" alt=\"Fb-Button\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1009\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"standard\"  width=\"400px\" size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"fb-share-button  \" data-href=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1009\" data-type=\"button_count\" data-size=\"small\"><\/div><\/div><p>The late Samuele Bacchiocchi is well known for his book &#8220;From Sabbath to Sunday : A Historical Investigation of the Rise of Sunday Observance in Early Christianity&#8221;.\u00a0 Regarding this book and his degree, he claims the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That he was the first non-Catholic to attend and obtain a doctorate at Gregorian University<\/li>\n<li>That he received a gold medal from Pope Paul VI<\/li>\n<li>That he received his degree summa cum laude<\/li>\n<li>That his thesis was published by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press<\/li>\n<li>That his thesis received an imprimatur from Fr Herve Carrier, SI<\/li>\n<li>That all of the above validate his claims about the Sabbath<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A controversy arose, initiated by me, disputing his claims.\u00a0 The Gregorian University initially disputed all of the above.\u00a0 Later they were shown to be wrong on some important points, but several matters still remain unresolved, and unfortunately are perpetuated in Adventist \/ Sabbatarian circles, and in copies of his book.<\/p>\n<p>This is an important topic for the Seventh-day Adventist church, and so I am maintaining its history here.\u00a0 Since I am moving to a new blog, I wish to consolidate these links into a single post.\u00a0 The history of my blog posts has been moved to this blog, and are listed below sequentially, with the oldest at the top.<\/p>\n<p>In summary, Bacchiocchi&#8217;s claims were partly in error, and the Gregorian&#8217;s claims were partly in error.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Incorrect claims by Bacchiocchi marked in orange<\/span>; <span style=\"color: #008000;\">correct claims by Bacchiocchi marked in green<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">He did indeed attend the university, and was the first non-Catholic to do so<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">He did obtain a gold medal from the pope, but was not present to receive it in person from the pope<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">He obtained his Licentia summa cum laude<\/span>, but <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">only magna cum laude for the Doctoratus<\/span> (still a good achievement)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">At least part of his thesis was published by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press.<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">It is not clear which parts these were, and how long they were.\u00a0 However, subsequent editions of the book claiming to be published by them were actually privately published by Bacchiocchi.\u00a0 Bacchiocchi gives conflicting evidence on different occasions as to what exactly was published<\/span>, and his later writings still refer to certain sections as not being published by Gregorian.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">He received an Imprimi Potest for what he published.\u00a0 He never received an Imprimatur.<\/span>\u00a0 These two are very different things.\u00a0 He could only receive an Imprimi Potest, basic permission to print (like a phone book), because the content was not in keeping with Catholic teaching.\u00a0 For both Imprimi Potest and Imprimatur, the permission only applies to the edition of the book (or whatever parts were published) for which it was initially given.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">In spite of this, he changed the words &#8220;Imprimi Potest&#8221; to &#8220;Imprimatur&#8221; on subsequent editions of his book.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">None of the truth, and certainly the falsehoods, support his claim that this validates his claims about the Sabbath.\u00a0 Doctrinal agreement with the contents was never recognised.\u00a0 Obtaining a degree and a summa\/magna cum laude simply means the scholarship was good, not that the conclusions were realistic or accurate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An important discussion on the matter, including a timeline, can be found on the <a title=\"Bacchiocchi's &quot;Gregorian Controversy&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070223155246\/http:\/\/xcg.kingary.net\/2006\/05\/05\/bacchiocchis-gregorian-controversy\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Archive for the old XCG blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These are the posts from my old blog, moved to the new blog.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bacchiocchi\u2019s thesis \u2013 the Gregorian Controversy\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.theotokos.co.za\/?p=1013\">Bacchiocchi&#8217;s thesis &#8211;
