Ellen White was Catholic in classifying her meat and fish

Ellen White was Catholic in classifying her meat and fish … at least as far as classifying fish as non-meat goes, as we do in Lent.

Does the coronavirus mean we might soon have a world-ruling Catholic monarchy?

Princess Sophie, the Hereditary Princess of Liechtenstein

Certainly an interesting idea, which Adventists could start to worry about. They may not die from the coronavirus, but what about a worldwide Sunday law implemented by a Catholic ruler of the world?

Jesus entered the most holy place in 1844?

Ellen White

When Jesus failed to return in person in October 1844 (aka the Great Disappointment), after several failed calculation attempts by proto-Adventists, some of William Miller’s followers decided that 1844 just had another meaning. What really happened, they claimed, is that Jesus entered the Holy of Holies in order to finish the atonement for our sins.

Subtle Arianism in the Seventh-day Adventist “Clear Word Bible”

Ellen White icon

Some of the Seventh-day Adventist founding fathers were Arians. Arians deny that Jesus Christ is God the Son, one being with the Father (consubstantial), equal to the Father (co-equal), and as eternal as the Father (co-eternal). The founding mother of Adventism wrote many Arian-like statements, such as “The man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty, yet Christ and the Father are one.”

Eucharistic pronouns – It vs Him?

Eucharistic adoration at Saint Brigid of Kildare Church (Dublin, Ohio)

This week on Facebook, I observed someone being attacked for incorrect and disrespectful pronoun usage. The main topic was churches allowing the homeless poor to sleep in the pews at night. A definite no-no for some, with legitimate reasons either way. But this particular grammar episode became bizarre.

The Pope as Pontifex Maximus and supposedly Christian High Priest

Pope Francis in Korea

One of the titles used by the pope is “Pontifex Maximus”. Literally, this means “chief bridge builder”, if the Latin etymology is correct. “Pontifex” may be derived from the Etruscan “preparer of the road”, which is similar to “bridge builder”.

The Lateran Council, the Universe, and Time’s Beginning

Pope Innocent III

Firmly we believe and we confess simply that the true God is one alone … creator of all visible and invisible things, of the spiritual and of the corporal; who by His own omnipotent power at once from the beginning of time created each creature from nothing, spiritual and corporal, namely, angelic and mundane, and finally the human, constituted as it were, alike of the spirit and the body

Providing a quote from the Bible seems like a good thing if you’re trying to convince someone else about what the Bible teaches. But often enough, you get another verse back at you, without context. That’s proof texting.
